DHS does not have a facility. All of our animals are housed in foster homes. Therefore, we require having a completed adoption application on file before we ask our foster families to rearrange their schedules for a meet and greet or answer individual inquiries. And, please be patient, we are staffed only by volunteers. It may be a few days before you hear from us.
This is Blanche. We got an email about her last night and couldn't say "no". She showed up outside of an apartment in Winnsboro about 3 days ago. She was hungry, matted and not using her left hind leg. An apartment tenant that had fed her, finally took her inside after she found neighborhood boys kicking her last night. I'm sure she was a threat. She is 15 lbs! The tenant contacted a local animal welfare group and they told her to contact DHS. We picked her up this afternoon and took her to the vet. The good news is she is Heart worm negative. The bad news is she has a badly dislocated hip that our vet says she has probably had half of her 8 month old life. It will need a $400 surgery (Louisiana prices) to repair and DHS does not have it. If everyone that reads this article donates just a dollar or two, she can have the surgery and we already have a tentative placement. The alternative is not good. Take a look at these pics and video and see if you can help this quiet, shy little girl lead a full life and give out some of the love she has been holding back because nobody she met until now, deserved it. As you can see on the video, she is on pain meds now and is comfortable unless you try to pick her up or she gets jostled.

All of our adoptable pets are housed with foster families. When age appropriate, they have been spay/neutered, crate, leash and house trained. They have all been living in a family environment so have been evaluated for temperament and personality. We believe that we should know each pet well enough to make sure that when adopted, everyone lives happily ever after. Since all of our animals are housed with fosters, we ask that you submit a completed application before we answer individual inquiries. Submitting an application never obligates you to adopt but we will have a better understanding of your needs so that we can better answer your questions.
