 OUR ADOPTION PROCESS

The Delta Humane Society has an adoption process that, though common in the Northeast, is a little more complicated than most rescues require in our area. But, we feel that the extra steps that a prospective adopter is asked to take and the extra care that we take, helps to insure a good home. Your  pet will come to you with a clean bill of health, spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and micro chipped. All for an average fee of from $250.00 (unless the pet has a sponsorship discount) to up to $500 for giant breeds. Much less than your family vet would charge.  DHS has one of the lowest return rates (adoptions that don't work out and the animal is returned to us) in the state. We're very proud of that and we feel that our 3 step adoption process is the reason.

1) The first step is to complete an adoption application.Completing an application never obligates you to adopt but it does give us a better chance of making sure the match will be a good one. As a part of  reviewing your application, we will speak with both your personal and veterinary references.

    2) Once we have processed the application, we will ask to visit your home for an informal visit. If possible, we like to meet all family members and pets. During the visit, we will discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

3) If the home visit goes well, we arrange for you to keep the pet for a "sleepover". That is, we want you to have the pet visit for a few days before the adoption is final. This helps to insure that your family members, lifestyle and current pets are all compatible with this possible new family member.

If, after the "sleep over" we are all satisfied that it is a good match, we make the adoption final.

DHS has some alternate methods of adoption.  When a family fosters a dog and then decides to adopt it, most or all of the adoption fee is waived. We also sometimes waive all or part of the adoption fee if the animal has special needs. Ask our representative about these options.

If at any time during the life of your pet, your circumstances change so that you can no longer provide a suitable home, DHS will accept the return of your pet, no questions asked.  DHS will always be there to help and advise you. We are committed to our mission and will be with you every step of the way
