DHS does not have a facility. All of our animals are housed in foster homes. Therefore, we require having a completed adoption application on file before we ask our foster families to rearrange their schedules for a meet and greet or answer individual inquiries. And, please be patient, we are staffed only by volunteers. It may be a few days before you hear from us.
Dooley just came into rescue last week. His owners left ahead of Hurricane Isaac and abandoned him and several other hunting dogs. He is not neutered but will be this week. Dooley was kept outside all his life but has been a perfect gentleman since living inside at the DHS foster farm. He gets along with all the other dogs and kitties, doesn't get into things or try to mark inside the house and is a pleasure. And, wonder of wonders, he does not let his little Beagle nose lead him away when he is outside and off leash. He stays pretty close to the house and is more interested in being petted and being with people than snooping. He is a great little dog and would make a wonderful, easy to care for family dog. Dooley is learning quickly every day how nice it is to live inside and be a member of the family. Dooley is a little afraid of loud noises and really doesn't want to be away from home so we believe he was of little value as a hunting dog but is great for a family member.

More about Dooley
Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
All of our adoptable pets are housed with foster families. When age appropriate, they have been spay/neutered, crate, leash and house trained. They have all been living in a family environment so have been evaluated for temperament and personality. We believe that we should know each pet well enough to make sure that when adopted, everyone lives happily ever after. Since all of our animals are housed with fosters, we ask that you submit a completed application before we answer individual inquiries. Submitting an application never obligates you to adopt but we will have a better understanding of your needs so that we can better answer your questions.
